How do I add friends?

To add a friend, open HeyTell and tap the + button.

If you are accepting an invite, or if the contact is using the same contact information you are using and using Low privacy or is using Medium privacy and you have mutual friends, you can talk to them directly.

If they are using different contact information or are using Medium or High privacy, you may be prompted to invite them via email or SMS, depending on which type of contact information you have for them. After they install HeyTell and click the invitation link on their mobile device, you'll be linked as friends. You will receive a notification and can begin sending them messages. Note that your carrier may charge you and your recipient SMS fees, but email should be free.

To add users as friends permanently that you added using Low privacy, select the conversation, tap the check mark button, then tap the Friend option. [TOP]

How do I enable notifications?

Open HeyTell, then tap More (...) > My Profile. Tap Continue (->), then ensure that Notifications is enabled. Tap Back to close, then restart HeyTell, and you should start receiving notifications! [TOP]

I can't find my friends?

It's likely that your friends' privacy is too high (Medium or High) for you to contact directly (they must first accept your invite to approve you) or the contact information you're using to contact them (email address or phone number) doesn't match what they set for themselves inside HeyTell.

In this case, when prompted, you can send them an invite via email or SMS (your carrier may charge you for SMS, but email should be free). When your friend clicks the link on the invite on their mobile device, it will open HeyTell and link you - you should receive a notification when this occurs and can begin exchanging voice messages.

If you set your privacy to "Low," friends can add you without sending you an invite if they know the data you set for yourself in the email or phone number fields on your HeyTell Profile page. [TOP]

I re-enabled notifications, but they're not arriving?

Open HeyTell, then tap More (...) > My Profile. Tap Continue (->), then ensure that Notifications is enabled. Tap Back to close, then restart HeyTell, and you should start receiving notifications! [TOP]

What's the deal with privacy settings?

HeyTell defaults to protecting your privacy when you first run the app. If you've got Medium or High privacy set for yourself (Medium is the default), friends can't send you a message until you've given them permission to do so, by accepting their invite. Invites can be sent by email or by SMS (SMS can cost money, but email is free! We especially encourage email invites if you're sending to International friends).

While we feel it's vitally important to protect user privacy by default, once you understand the privacy levels, you do have an option to make them less stringent.

So, let's run down the Privacy settings you can use inside HeyTell. You can set your privacy levels from the Profile page (tap More(...) > My Profile > Continue) and you can change them at any time and for any reason!
